About The Project

Project and objectives

The Project aims to restore Birzeit’s historic area by rehabilitating and reusing its old buildings with the involvement of the residents. It also aims to develop public spaces and infrastructure, as well as to upgrade public services and tourism and to encourage economic, cultural and tourism activities. The project seeks to strike a balance between the achievement of social, economic and cultural development on the one hand, and the conservation of heritage and its cultural and historical value on the other. In addition to the aforementioned aims, the Project will endeavor to achieve the following objectives:

1.   To regulate construction and new additions built in the historical area through a design plan, which will contribute to the enhancement of the surrounding environment and improve the traditional architectural fabric of the historical area.

2.   To involve local residents and landowners in the regeneration and development of the historical area.

3.   To solve the complex problem of property ownership (e.g. multiple title-holders).

4.   To empower other relevant institutions and the municipality in the protection and rehabilitation process

5.   To embed the process of the rehabilitation, development and conservation of heritage within local institutions and to conduct training courses and establish qualifications for competence in this field.

6.   To establish long-term cultural, social and tourist activities to complement the rehabilitation of the town.

7.   To rehabilitate buildings and put them to good use, to improve public areas, plazas, alleys and streets and rehabilitate the infrastructure so as to create several attractive spaces within the historical area.
