About The
Project
Beneficiaries
The Project
is for all the inhabitants of the town of Birzeit in general and
for the owners, users and residents of its historical area in
particular. Based on the principle of working with people rather
than on their behalf, and in recognition that development simply
means expanding people’s options through participation, the
project invited people to share their ideas and approaches, and
through a process of listening to their views engaged in a joint
needs assessment. After all, it is the people who over the years
have created their own heritage by passing on their inherited
customs, traditions, values, crafts, vocations, games, and
norms. It is this deep rooted heritage that gives Birzeit local
society its identity and meaning.
The project
for the rehabilitation and development of the historical area
therefore relies mainly on a participatory approach, which means
that all stakeholders will engage in the planning and execution
of the projects from its early stages. It is therefore essential
for public and private institutions to also be involved in the
various phases of the Project. In this way the Project will
benefit from and build on the views of the residents and users
of the historical area, as well as those of its property and
land owners and will also listen to the opinions of those who
have recently left.
