Volunteer Work Camps

Friends of Riwaq- Volunteer summer camp

A summer camp was organized in the historic center of Mazare' Al Nobani in 2006, a village to the north of Ramallah. Participants were friends of Riwaq, a group of 20 young girls and boys from Ramallah. Activities included painting cement additions to in the historical buildings and cleaning old allies. Children from the village were also invited to participate.

The main aim of this summer camp is first to involve young people from Ramallah in voluntary work in a remote village, and second to spread awareness among children and youth about the importance of protecting the traditional fabric of Palestinian villages and towns.

"Palestinian-European volunteer renovation work camp"

The summer of 2007 marked the first Palestinian-European volunteer camp. This project was implemented in cooperation with Rempart, and was funded by the European Commission. This was a pilot project that we hope to do on an annual basis.

The work-camp aimed at implementing voluntary work for young Europeans and Palestinians between the ages 18 – 28 years old. The goal was to provide an environment for young people to work together to renovate a building that shall be later used as a cultural centre and a museum.

Voluntary work took place in Al Taybeh over the whole month of July. 16 European (mostly French) volunteers and 30 Palestinians worked on an old building in Al Taybeh in cooperation with the Association Saint Jean Quatre Couronnes, a French organization working in the town, as well as the Municipality of Al Taybeh.

This project was an opportunity to develop relationships between European and Palestinian project managers, work-camp leaders, and young volunteers as an example of dialogue and exchange between the cultures through heritage preservation

The project last for 9 months, in 3 stages

stage one: preparation and training of trainers in the workcamp. (January-June : 6 months)

Stage two: work camp implementation (July, 2007)

Stage three: the production of a booklet to introduce architectural heritage in Palestine and to promote the concept of voluntary renovation work camps in Palestine and abroad. (July-September 3 months)
