TOM KAY AWARD 2011
This year marks the third
round of the Tom Kay Award for freehand sketching
organized by Riwaq. This year the award was opened to
participants from three West Bank universities: An-Najah
University, Palestine Polytechnic University, and
Birzeit University. 28 students participated, and
drawings were judged by a panel consisting of Adah Kay
(Tom’s wife), Dr. Tina Sherwell (director of the
International Academy of Art – Palestine), Fida Touma
(co-director of Riwaq), and Lana Judeh (Riwaq). The
selection of winners was challenging in view of the high
quality of the submitted drawings; drawings were judged
according to Drawing techniques, composition,
expression, the ability to draw from reality, and
originality.
The First three prizes were
awarded in the following manner:
First
prize: Rania Na’im Jamous – An-Najah University (700
USD)
Second
prize: Theeb Mara’bi – An-Najah University (500 USD)
Third
prize: Zain Ya’qub Ya’ish – An-Najah University (300
USD)
And an honorary Award:
Huda Samir Abu ‘Aisheh – An-Najah University
About Tom Kay:
Tom Kay was a London based
architect who lived in Ramallah in last few years of his
life. He taught at Birzeit University and had
volunteered in Riwaq since 2006. In December 2007, Tom
died in London and in his will; he allocated a fund for
the setup of an annual drawing competition geared
towards students of Engineering in Palestinian
universities.
